Best Road Bike Reviews

Getting your first Road bike?

It can be a tough choice to make considering the sheer number of bikes that are available in the market.

However, after months of testing and riding with daily riders, we’ve shortlisted the top 6 road bikes that offer just great performance are comfortable for long-duration cruising and are priced right.

How to Buy the Right Road Bike?

Before you jump on to our top recommendations for 2015, here are two things you matter and you should consider before buying your first road bike.

Frame Materials

The material that is used to build the frame and fork of your bike has a significant result on how your bike performs on road.

There are generally four frame material you can choose from i.e. alloy, steel, aluminium or carbon and the price range is majorly decided by the material you choose to go with.

While most low-end bikes come with an alloy frame, if you can shed the few extra hundred dollars then a carbon body is definitely worth the extra spend. Carbon frames are more aerodynamic, strong and light when compared to alloy frames and thus bring you a superior riding experience.

Most aluminium and steel bikes cost below $600. While you steer towards the $1000 mark, you’ll start noticing bikes with a carbon fork or partial carbon parts but for a full carbon bike you can expect to spend upwards of $1500.

Bike Size and Fit

This is more of a subjective metric but ensuring that a particular model comes in multiples sizes is a good.

Make sure the bike you’re planning to buy comes in a size that is optimum for your height and weight.

Bike Size Chart

Best Road Bike for Competitive preparation and Triathlons

1. Kestrel Talon – The bike features a carbon fibre frame & fork which makes it the probably the best value bike in terms of performance and comfort when it comes to intense riding sessions.

2.Vilano Forza 2.0  – The all rounder of road bikes. It is suitable for prep-work and even riding through your first few competitions. Priced at $770, it is definitely one of the most affordable bikes that delivers on the kind of performance you need when competing. And after replacing the saddle for a more comfortable one, I wouldn’t mind doubling it as a daily touring bike.

Best Budget Bike for Daily Commuters

1. Vilano Aluminium 21 Speeds – Priced at around $300, this standard vilano road bike is the complete bang for your buck. It is cheap, comfortable and durable.

2. Schwinn Men’s Phocus Drop Bar Road Bike – The bike offers just 14 speeds but its light weight makes up for it. If having more speed options is important to you then paying a few extra dollars for the Vilano is well worth it.

#1 Recommendation : Kestrel Talon Road Bicycle

4.9 Overall

If you’re planning to compete in triathlons and similar competitions then Kestrel Talon is one of the best full carbon fibre bikes that you can get under a budget. The 700K & 800K carbon fibre combination gives it just the right blend of stiffness and flexibility.

It’s aerodynamic tubing and Dual-platform geometry makes it a great ride for both city travel and triathlons. The bike boasts Shimano 105 gear-set which switch pretty smooth and powerful.

Key highlights:

  • Blend of 700K and 800K High Modulus Carbon Fiber for stiffness, speed
  • Shimano drivetrain with 105 rear derailleur and Microshift shifters add efficiency
  • Oval Concepts 750 Base Bar & Ergo Bend Extensions for proper position
  • Oval Concepts 327 Alloy Clinchers adds aerodynamics and stiffness

#2 Vilano FORZA 2.0

4.3 Overall

Vilano FORZA 2.0 offers a Lightweigh 6061 Double Butted Aluminum framework with 12k Carbon Fiber Fork.

Lightweight 6061 Aluminum Frame

Forza 2.0 is supported by a Lightweight 6061 Aluminum Frame . The lightweight frame allows you to reach top speed while the integrated shifters make sure that you do not lose control at any point of time.

Apart from being lightweight, I love how sturdy it is and the double butted framework is definitely what makes it so. I wouldn’t mind using it as a prep bike for competitions or for day-to-day cruising around the city.

Shimano Tiagra 9 Speed

The Groupset is as impressive as it can get. Forza 2.0 is powered by the top of the line Shimano Tiagra 9 Speed Groupset.

Something I would replace….

One thing that you might not be thrilled about is the seat. I got as a replacement as I didn’t find it quiet right for long rides but that’s a personal choice specific to you.

Give it a ride and if you don’t find the saddle to be comfortable enough, there are a lot of alternatives available in the market.

Best Road Bike Under $500 :

#3 Vilano Aluminium – 21 Speed

4.3 Overall

Design and Built

The Vilano Aluminium is supported by 6061 Double Butted Aluminum frame and the 700c doubled walled CNC machined sides wheelset. While riding, the bike is pretty sturdy and easy to manoeuvre.

The assembly process is pretty straight forward and it didn’t take us more than 10 minutes to get it all set. Design wise, it’s sleek and gives a premium look to it.

Shimano Breaks and Shifters

The bike is powered by Shimano brakes and transmission, the availability of 21 speeds make it a easy to maintain control in every possible situation.

While it looks great and performs well for a $300 road bike, we really wish the seats were better padded. They aren’t good for long distance riding and you will regret not changing the saddle sooner.

The Vilano Aluminum is our top recommendation if you’re not looking to spend over $500, however, you will have to swap the default saddle with a more comfortable one to really get the best riding experience.

Best Road Bike Under $300

#4 Schwinn Men’s Prelude Bicycle

4 Overall

Schwinn is popular for making some of the best low-budget road bikes in the market. Though the bikes aren’t, in terms of performance or design, the best in the market but they’re surely the ones at the best price.

For a bike that comes with a price tag of under $300, the Schwinn Prelude has a lot of great features to offer.  The bike is built on an aluminium framework and features the Schwinn road fork.

It is a great option, if you need a budget ride for cruising around the city but I would definitely not recommend it if you’re training for or competing in a professional competition.

Moreover, it is not light when compared to a Forza, however if you’re not willing to go up a little on your budget that is one sad trade-off that you’ll have to make. Another key drawback that might affect you is that it comes in just one frame-size.

The bike has been very well received by its users as is evident by over 190 positive reviews on Amazon.

However, despite it’s drawbacks, none of the other bikes in its price range can compete with the kind of performance, comfort and stability that the Prelude has to offer.

#5 Vilano Shadow with Shimano STI Integrated Shifters

3.6 Overall

Vilano Shadow is a good pick as your first road bike when you’re not looking to spend a lot of money.

Just like the Vilano Aluminium, Shadow also features a lightweight 6061 double butted aluminum frame with an integrated headset. Unfortunately, this one does not feature 21 speeds like the last one and you’ll have to settle for 14.

Performance wise, it’s at par with any road bike in its price range and the seat stays comfortable while long distance riding. By the way, if that’s something you’re planning to do then you might want to get a water bottle carrier.

Even if you’ve never put together a bike all by yourself, you’ll find the assembly process to be pretty straightforward and shouldn’t take more than 15-20 minutes to get it together.

If in doubt, you can always head down to your local bike shop and ask for an assembly.

They’ll probably do it for free if you offer to get all the tune ups from them.

It’s a great bike at a great price but for some obvious reasons, Vilano Aluminium is the clear (and cheaper) option here.

#6 GMC Denali Road Bike

3.4 Overall

As basic as it gets, the GMC Denali is the ultimate entry level low-end road bike.

The bike costs just around $210 and while it is not something you’d get for a daily commute or to prepare for competitions. But, it is a great buy if you’re looking for a fun bike to ride on your days off or something cool to gift to your siblings.

Despite the low price tag, the frame is pretty sturdy and the saddle is comfortable for short distance rides.

However, breaks aren’t particularly exceptional and I wouldn’t highly recommend you to get a replacement as it is a key safety feature. The bike has been built keeping kids and teenagers in mind, so depending upon your height, you might also have to get a replacement on the handlebars.

Surprisingly, the bike offers 21 speeds, something that we failed to get with the Vilano Shadow. It comes integrated with the best in class, Shimano derailleur and Revo shifts.

It is a great bike for the price but not something that I’d recommend my friends.
